Dear Reader,
Welcome to Issue Forty-Six of The Collagist: We're very excited this month to bring you a special section titled "Mud & Fish & Brother & Woods: On Repetition and Restriction and Difference in the Fiction of Peter Markus," an online continuation of a symposium held last month at Art X Detroit, to honor 2012 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow in Literary Arts (and Dzanc author) Peter Markus. In addition to an excerpt from Markus's manuscript "In a House in a Woods," there are two poems by Sean Thomas Dougherty and essays by Blake Butler, Aaron Burch, and me, all of which were presented at the event. (David McLendon and Lynn Crawford also spoke at the symposium.) Markus is one of our favorite writers here at Dzanc and The Collagist, and we're so glad to be able to continue this celebration of his work in our space.
In fiction this month, we have new works by Evelyn Somers, Carmen Lau, and Meghan L. Dowling, plus two stories drawn from newly-published collections by former contributors: "Rabbit Fur Coat," from Happy Rock by Matthew Simmons, and the title story from Norman Lock's Love Among the Particles. We also have novel excerpts from Virginia Pye's River of Dust, Douglas Trevor's Girls I Know, and Katherine Bucknell's +1.
In poetry, we have new work by Melissa Cundieff-Pexa, Christopher Crawford, Joshua Marie Wilkinson, and Tiffanie Desmangles. Our book review section contains coverage of Swim for the Little One First by Noy Holland (reviewed by Michael Jauchen), All My Friends by Marie NDaiye (reviewed by Angela Woodward), All Black Everything by Weston Cutter (reviewed by Jessica Plante), and The Invisibles by Hugh Sheehy (reviewed by Peter Fontaine).
As always, thanks to all of the above contributors for being a part of this issue, and thanks to you and all the rest of our readers for visiting us this month.
Sincerely,
Matt Bell
