Climb up on the Moon? Of course we did. All you had to do was row out to it in a boat and, when you were underneath it, prop a ladder against her and scramble up.
The Distance of the Moon—Italo Calvino
Sometimes it’s the best midnight
picnic of your childhood
sitting on the moon’s fur
surface. In the constant
cloudlessness all the stars
sing camp fires
right into your eyes.
Sometimes I do wish
for brilliance
blindness, that I wouldn’t see
whiteness in bathroom door silhouettes
anymore, so I’d exist perfect-
er back on Earth. Even feeling
special far
from your mundane life,
night can overtake
the delight of melting
marshmallows.
But cheer up! If you’re not sobbing,
it’s quiet enough on the moon
to hear nothingness
while you’re still alive.
