Five Steps Closer to Knowing First

Nicelle Davis

1.
I saw a chicken steal
a cat’s left eye
with the same motion
you use to measure
a pinch of salt.
Watch your hands.
They look hungry.

2.
In a fowl’s stomach
the cat’s green eye
turned into an egg.
Hatched as a clock.
Little feet, ticking
inside the red hen.

3.
My doctor didn’t say,
antibiotics counteract
contraceptives. My
veins are now a string
pulled taut between two
tin cans. Does it work?

4.
It works, the doctor says,
the heart is in its cage
kicking at your door.
Hear it? Like a cat
drowning in a bowl
of chicken noodle.

5.
I mean to say Rooster,
but say instead, more
salt on hard boiled?
It was a pill the size
of an eye I swallowed
that turned into your son.
